College Preparatory Program
This program includes informative sessions preparing students for College. Through workshops students are taught effective study skills and assistance is provided to navigate the application process, school selection and financial aid options. We organize college tours help to broaden a child's horizon beyond Brooklyn. And for students entering University a session on how to successfully transition from a High School to College level of academic success. All of this is in hopes that they gain resources that they will eventually bring back to the community that provided them with access to the wonderful world of academia.
Merit-based scholarships available to children of the Community based on academic performance, community service and financial need. N.E.D has amassed over $250,000 available to Nehemiah Scholarships. This is given to install moral accountability to young scholars from the community that help them finance their collegiate journey which minimizes the "brain drain" of Brownsville.
N.E.D believes, "We build, We own, and We profit" and through ownership we create a better Community for Nehemiah homeowners and the surrounding communities of Brownsville and East New York. For example, funding for Nehemiah scholarships is from a unique Community Sovereign Fund created by Kofi and Mawuli Hormeku utilizing rental income generated from 1168 Lenox Road, an NED owned property. This fund gives NED financial independence in creating philanthropic initiatives that benefit the Community. Kofi Hormeku created Nehemiah Park on Mother Gaston Blvd. and secured 3.1 million dollars in funding for improvement of the Public Parks in Brownsville. When he served as Chair of the Parks and Recreation Committee of Community Board 16, he oversaw the upkeep of all parks in Ocean Hill-Brownsville. Now Mawuli sits on Community Board 16, where he helps to make decisions regarding the maintenance and transformation of all Ocean Hill-Brownsville.
